Why There Was No
Sequel to Freddy vs. Jason
by Chris Vegvary
In 2003, the world got together to watch the showdown
between two of horror’s biggest icons in the industry with the movie Freddy vs. Jason. It was a battle that
had been brewing for a long time, dating back to Friday the 13th part VII, when Jason ended up fighting a
telekinetic teenage girl instead. So when the dust settled, Freddy vs. Jason was the most
financially successful film in both franchises (excluding the remakes), and a
sequel seemed to be in the cards for our favorite horror duo…but alas, this was
not meant to be. Here’s why.
When talk of a sequel to Freddy
vs. Jason began, several options were thrown into the mix: the possibility
of the two facing off against Michael Myers, or Pinhead, or the one that seemed
to be everyone’s favorite, the character of Ashley J. Williams from the Evil Dead series, played by Bruce Campbell.
A script treatment for the film was released on the internet, titled Freddy vs. Jason: Ashes 2 Ashes, and it
featured Ash Williams going to Crystal Lake’s local S-Mart store to show the
employees how retail is done, and of course, getting mixed up with the likes of
Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. With a treatment this good, all we were
waiting for was a green light to go ahead and start filming. But then, the
studios couldn’t agree on a clear winner, each wanting to see their franchise’s
main character as the victor. Without any agreement on who would win, things
quickly fell apart.
Luckily for us, the entire idea was not scrapped. In 2007,
the first of a series of comic books was released called Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. In it, many of the ideas from the film’s
script treatment were realized in the form of comic art. While it wasn’t as
thrilling as actually seeing all these characters in action on the big screen,
it was definitely worth reading. A couple of years later, a sequel to the
comics was realeased, entitled Freddy vs.
Jason vs. Ash: The Nightmare Warriors, which saw the return of many of the
survivors from previous Nightmare on Elm
Street and Friday the 13th
films as they banded together to destroy Freddy, Jason, and the
Necronomicon once and for all.
So while we will never see a true and proper sequel to Freddy vs. Jason in the form of a film,
at least we can all enjoy their further exploits in the world of comics. And on
that note, I should mention that
Halloween Costumes 4 U has tons of costumes, including Freddy and Jason!
